Micro needling
Micro needling is a chemical-free, minimally-invasive procedure for skin rejuvenation that is safe and effective for all skin types and colors that could improve your complexion and fight the signs of aging.
What is micro needling?
Micro needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a skin rejuvenation process used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and tighten skin, as well as reduce pore size and treat issues like acne scarring. On darker skin types there is some concern about hyperpigmentation, but with an experienced practitioner and the right device, this concern is minimized.
There are a wide variety of devices on the market used for micro needling, but all exhibit one similar characteristic – they feature several microneedles used to puncture the skin, creating a “controlled” skin injury. When punctures are made, the body responds by repairing the minor injuries through the production of new collagen and elastin. The process also improves blood flow to affected areas.
As we age, the production of collagen and elastin, which help to give skin elasticity and fullness, taper off and our skin sags, wrinkles, and suffers as a result. Micro needling helps to stimulate the body’s own healing response to improve the texture, firmness, and volume of skin, as well as reduce the appearance of pores, acne scars, and stretch marks.
Micro needling can be used both for breaking down scar tissue and rebuilding younger, firmer looking skin. The procedure is most often used to rejuvenate areas like the face, neck, chest, and hands, and it is safe for use on sensitive areas (like around the eyes and lips) where other treatments like chemical peels or laser resurfacing aren’t suitable.
Micro needling devices used by professionals tend to feature needles that vary in length from as 0.5 up to 2-3 millimeters. There are tips with flat or beveled edges.
The needles are short enough that only the surface of the skin is punctured while the epidermis remains intact, reducing discomfort and down time, as opposed to other skin rejuvenation procedures. Professional equipment features medical-grade titanium needles that are non-allergenic.

Dr. Gallo can do for you.
How does micro needling work?
Like any cosmetic procedure, the process will begin with an initial consultation with the doctor. You will be provided with information about the procedure and have a chance to address any questions or concerns. The doctor will determine if you are a good candidate for micro needling and then proceed to create a plan that addresses your particular needs.
Each appointment begins with the application of a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the treatment. The duration of the treatment may depend on the devices being used and the area of skin being treated.
In most cases, several sessions are required to achieve optimal results. If your issues are relatively minor (fine lines, mild scarring, etc.), 3-4 treatments may suffice. For more serious scarring and deep wrinkles, 5-6 treatments may be recommended.
Treatments can be scheduled at intervals of 4-6 weeks, and regular maintenance thereafter (a follow-up procedure every 6-12 months) will help to sustain results and even prevent further scarring and wrinkles to a degree. Often, micro needling is paired with other rejuvenation procedures, such as the use of anti-aging serums or topical growth factors, which are more easily absorbed into the skin during micro needling.
What does recovery from micro needling entail?
Because micro needling is minimally invasive, there is very little recovery or downtime involved. Patients can generally expect to see some redness immediately following the procedure, comparable to getting a facial, but it generally subsides within a day or two. You should be able to return to work or other normal daily activities immediately following your micro needling treatment, but if you are concerned about your appearance, taking off the day of the procedure should suffice.
What results can I expect from micro needling?
Results vary by patient and will depend on a number of factors, including the condition of your skin, your age, and the particular issues you’re attempting to address. The number of treatments you have will also affect the outcome, with greater improvements resulting after each treatment. However, you will start to see noticeable changes after just one treatment.
You can reasonably expect to see some measure of improvement in a number of areas, including reduction of the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and wrinkles, as well as minimization of pores, skin regeneration, and better overall skin tone and texture.
