Revision Facelift
What Is a Revision Facelift?
A revision facelift is a second facelift after the first didn’t reverse the signs of aging as much as you hoped. It could also be used to enhance the results of that surgery further or correct signs of aging that are reappearing. Plus, Dr. Gallo can fix any cosmetic defects caused by your first surgery or reduce excessive scarring from it.
For a revision, the process may consist of one or more procedures to help you achieve the anticipated outcome.
Just so you know, Dr. Gallo can perform a revision facelift without any additional treatments, or you could opt for multiple procedures like a revision facelift and neck lift.
Who Could Use a Revision Facelift?
The main requirement is to have had a facelift in the past that didn’t give you satisfactory results or ones that have faded. Prime examples when it may be necessary include if you have any of the following:
- New sagging or other signs of aging appear after
- Asymmetry
- Overly taut skin
- Excessive scarring
- Changes in facial structure from excessive weight gain or loss
Most people opt to get a facelift in their 40s, 50s, or 60s, so a revision surgery can be done anytime after the initial one. There are no age limits, but as you age, your skin loses elasticity, which affects healing and your results. For this reason, if you’re interested in getting a facelift adjustment, Dr. Gallo will thoroughly examine your skin and educate you on your anticipated results to give you a realistic idea of what to expect.
How a Facelift Revision Differs From an Initial Facelift
More often than not, a facelift revision is for a superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) facelift – one that targets the tissue deep within the face.
Though Dr. Gallo carefully chooses incision sites, mainly to minimize visible scarring, the need to meticulously select the surgical locations becomes even more significant the second time around. This time, Dr. Gallo must consider where any scarring formed. And, even with a revision, selecting incision sites includes reducing the amount of visible scarring.
Your skin also changes over time; therefore, Dr. Gallo incorporates how your skin has aged since the first procedure.
Overall, a revision is a more complex procedure than the original one, but Dr. Gallo uses his education, experience, skill, steady hand, and vision to provide you with an oftentimes more refined appearance than the first time you went in for surgery.
Who Qualifies for This Procedure
As with a standard facelift or even a browlift, Dr. Gallo will assess you to determine if you’re in good enough health to undergo the procedure safely. For instance, uncontrolled or poorly managed diabetes can hinder healing and put you at a greater risk for infection. On the other hand, cardiovascular problems could increase your chances of complications from the anesthesia.
Moreover, you must have realistic expectations of how much Dr. Gallo can correct the initial surgery and lessen the signs of aging, which is why part of your consultation will include going over what results you can expect.
What to Expect During a Revision Facelift
Most patients will receive general anesthesia, but those who don’t need as intense of a procedure may have a local and an oral or IV sedative. Either way, you’ll still need a ride home that day.
Once you receive the anesthesia, Dr. Gallo will make surgical incisions around your hairline, ears, or chin, working around any previous incisions or scar tissue. Dr. Gallo will lift any tissue and then remove any excess fat, etc. If any issues arose from the first facelift, such as asymmetry, Dr. Gallo will correct those as well.
In most cases, Dr. Gallo will recontour the skin around your facial structure and changes made.
While Dr. Gallo will use dissolvable stitches underneath the skin, either non-dissolvable ones or staples may be used on the skin. You may need drainage tubes to remove any fluid.
At the conclusion of the surgery, Dr. Gallo will place bandages over the surgical sites to protect the areas from infection.
Recovering From a Revision Facelift
Some patients may find their revision recovery is a bit more extensive than their initial one, but several factors affect how your recovery will differ, such as:
- Your age difference between surgeries
- Type(s) of revisions completed
- Amount/location of scar tissue from the first surgery
- How much tightening or lifting is necessary
- Size of the incisions necessary
Like with the first surgery, you’ll visit for follow-ups to remove any staples or non-dissolvable stitches and ensure you’re healing properly.
Expect to have some bruising and swelling for the first few days after. You can also anticipate discomfort during this time, but Dr. Gallo will prescribe medication to minimize your pain.
The entire healing process may take six months to a year, but in the first three months, you should get a general idea of the results. You may still have some excess tightness at that time, but it’ll subside once the tissue reaches its final position.
What Results Can You Expect
The results you obtain depend on the revisions made as well as if you had a revision facelift and neck lift or only the facelift.
Overall, though, your skin will look tighter and more youthful. Any lifting looks natural. For patients with asymmetry from the first surgery, your facial contours will have better balance.
If scarring was a problem, you’ll have less of it after your second procedure

Frequently Asked Questions About a Revision Facelift
If learning about a facelift revision piqued your interest or you just want answers to your questions, you can find them here:
A revision facelift is one done for any reason after you’ve already had one. It could be to correct any issues after the first, enhance the results of the initial one, or because of facial structure changes since the original facelift.
Expect to pay between $6,500 and $25,000 for a revision. The price differs based on the complexity of the procedure. With that said, you’ll receive an accurate quote at your consultation to ensure this is the right option for you.
Yes, it’s possible for a surgeon to redo a facelift if issues occurred during or since the first that you’d like to improve. Dr. Gallo can perform a revision whether he or another surgeon performed the initial procedure.
Jowls can reappear after a facelift as the signs of aging continue, especially from the sun. Weight gain may also lead to jowls returning. Correcting this is possible with a revision surgery.
Or, dermal fillers can volumize the face and reduce the appearance of jowls if you’d like to opt for a non-surgical method this time around.
Many surgeons offer revisions to correct the results of a previous surgery that either didn’t provide satisfactory results or the effects of it diminished over time. One of the more common ones Dr. Gallo performs is a facelift revision.
You may have too much tightening or not enough. It’s possible you’ll have difficulty moving your facial muscles if the first facelift was overdone. Excessive scarring may occur with a botched facelift, and it could be thick and/or visible and not fade with time. Facial asymmetry is another sign of an unsuccessful facelift.
Though you may be anxious to correct any issues from a previous facelift, Dr. Gallo urges patients to wait a year after the first one so their face has ample time to heal. Additionally, it can take up to a year for the results to settle, which ensures Dr. Gallo has an accurate understanding of the problems that require revision.
Fortunately for patients, facelifts are common, relatively safe surgeries. Only about 1.8% of patients experience complications, and your risk is extremely low after you undergo the proper screening and when Dr. Gallo takes every precaution necessary to reduce complications and provide you with exceptional results.
The results dissipate at that point, sometimes slightly after, and you’ll need a follow-up surgery to maintain them or you'll develop signs of aging all over again.
As with your first facelift, you visit for a consultation to ensure it’s safe for you. Dr. Gallo will even assess your skin elasticity to ensure you'll heal optimally this time around.
